Fireplace Doors For A Household Fireplace

Tuesday 14 October 2008 @ 9:42 am

Fireplace doors are among the fireplaces accessories that can be used as an alternative to regular fireplace screens. If by some reason pertaining to style or availability you are not able to use a fire screen, using a fireplace door would make a more attractive fireplace.
Types Of Fireplace Doors

Two main types of fireplace doors have been commonly used. One is the single door that covers the entire fireplace opening, and the other type is the two-piece fireplace door that opens on hinges such that the connecting seam runs down the middle of the fireplace opening. Besides these two types, some more contemporary and unique styles are available that do not fit into these categories. Further, all fireplace doors are not sold as complete units. In some types, you have to buy the framing portions separately from the individual door pieces. An important issue in purchasing a door for the fireplace is whether or not the door will require additional framework in order to complete the opening and installation of the door. In all cases of making a purchase, make sure beforehand whether the door comes with everything required for completing your fireplace. There are fireplace doorframes available in a wide variety of material and finish ranging from gold, silver and pewter, to iron and many other materials.

How Dirty: Your Fireplace Chimney Sweep

Tuesday 7 October 2008 @ 10:04 am

With the growing number of homes being built with fireplaces, the danger of residential fires has increased. Why, you ask?  Simple.  Fireplaces require chimneys, chimneys require cleaning, and people don’t even think about getting their chimneys cleaned. That is where fireplace chimney sweeps come in handy.

More Than A Man Covered In Soot

The fireplace chimney sweep is more than just a dirty man with a broom in his hand. The chimney sweep is essential to maintaining a safe fireplace chimney. The principal job of a chimney sweep is to help prevent chimney related fires. Although it is common for there to be fires in fireplaces, fires in chimneys are dangerous. Chimneys aren’t just a fixture in fireplaces; wood stoves, coal, oil and gas heating systems usually come equipped with some sort of ventilation system.

Fireplace Accessories For Every Household

Tuesday 16 September 2008 @ 11:10 am

In the not-so-distant past, most homes relied on fireplaces as a necessity for heating. Certainly, it was enjoyable, too, to have a warm and cozy fireplace in the living room for family get togethers or on wintry evenings. Even in warm climates, the presence of a nice fireplace adds to the value of the house. The right fireplace accessories, to decorate your fireplace with, are thus of high importance to every household.

Factors In Selecting Fireplace Accessories

Two main factors that determine the purchase of most fireplace accessories are style and convenience. Style requires that the accessories you buy fit well with the design and look of the fireplace. Convenience refers to the ease of using the accessories. Without convenience, even the most stylish accessories are practically worthless, since you do mean to enjoy the warmth of your elegant fireplace (or do you really want a showpiece?). Some commonly used fireplace accessories are described below.

Convert From Wood with an Electric Fireplace Insert

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 9:52 am

Today’s home improvement craze has old homes being updated and remodeled all over the world. The charm of an old home is irresistible for many of us, especially when combined with some of our modern conveniences. While many of the architectural details found in the older homes are priceless and irreplaceable, some the repairs can be very pricey indeed. One problem is the crumbling chimney that makes a charming fireplace unusable. Technology has that one covered. An electric fireplace insert makes an old wood-burning fireplace a clean burning modern convenience.

Convert to Clean

Modern wood-burning fireplaces are designed according to anti-pollution regulations. The older fireplaces may not meet local building codes even if they don’t need repair. Older chimneys often pull heat from the room, making them an inefficient way to warm a room. Add to that the messy cleanup and you may want to consider an alternative.

The Modern Old-Fashioned Electric Fireplace

Thursday 24 July 2008 @ 10:03 am

At one time, the wood-burning fireplace was a necessary part of a home. It was the source of heat and, sometimes a place to cook. That was a long time ago. The first generation that didn’t need a fireplace for cooking and heating wanted one because they had grown up sharing family time around the fireplace and couldn’t imagine a home without one.

The difficulty in maintaining a wood-burning fireplace eventually inspired builders to include gas fireplaces in new construction. The beauty and tradition of the fireplace remained while the messy cleanup and need for wood was gone. As homes became all electric and families focused on television instead of each other, the fireplace began to disappear.

Corner Fireplace for a New Angle

Monday 19 March 2007 @ 8:24 pm

Most home buyers hope to find the perfect dream house – including at least one fireplace. The traditional style house always has a spot that’s just right for a fireplace. It should be centered on the wall that you see as you enter the room, of course. There should be a nice chimney that can be painted a contrasting color or composed of natural stone to draw attention to this dreamy focal point. These days, modern architecture doesn’t always include that perfect spot. Not every room has that nicely placed wall facing the entry. But every room has at least one corner. That means there’s always a spot for a corner fireplace.

Looking at the Angles

Building Outdoor Fireplaces With Your Family

Monday 26 February 2007 @ 8:41 pm

If you are interested in spending some quality time with your family this summer, you may want to start with building outdoor fireplaces. This simple constructive act can demonstrate the ability of your family to get along and accomplish a task. Even despite all of the possible problems you may have with your family, you can still get together and accomplish a task that involves putting together and building outdoor fireplaces. This proves something in a day and age that seems to disregard family and the family unit as a powerful tool in society.

If your family is anything like my family, they will enjoy the act of building outdoor fireplaces because it will give them the chance to upstage one another. One will always want to carry more bricks than the other, for example, to prove that they are stronger. From this point, more quality building action can follow and before you know it you will be standing before a well-built fireplace for the outdoors that you can now enjoy in your backyard. The methodology of getting to that point is something that can last a lifetime as you have your family over to build lots of things in the future.

Brick Fireplace

Friday 9 February 2007 @ 8:41 pm

When you modernize your house and you bring in the fancy designer to help in bringing your home to the 21st century level of modernization, most likely he/she would advise you to get rid of the brick fireplace your ancestors had built in your home. However, many people are emotionally attached to their old fireplaces, and may not feel too great in having it demolished, though they realize that the brick fireplace looks quite shabby and will not match a re-vamping in the interior décor.

Does A Brick Fireplace Look Modern Enough For The Times We Live In?

There is no right or wrong answer here. You will know when you see it whether it suits your style or not. And hence, when we are talking of one’s personal liking and disliking, there is no way one can tell which opinion is better that the other. Opinions are opinions – everybody is entitled to their own.

Marble Fireplace Beauty And Cost Balanced

Friday 22 December 2006 @ 10:50 pm

Fireplaces are one of the most attractive add-ons in any type of interior. More and more houses include a fire place in their drawing room, though not everyone maintains it with live fire. The majority use the marble fireplace as a substitute to wood. While wood is exceptional in looks, most live fireplaces would be better off with something that does not burn easily.

Take The Necessary Precautions

When you decide to have a live fireplace, you will need to install all the fire-safety precautions as per the National safety guidelines. This will include that you will have a fire-extinguisher close by, smoke alarms and all other things that would make the home fire-fit.
