Lighting Every Minute of Bath - Bath lighting

Thursday 23 October 2008 @ 9:34 am

Just as your bathroom needs to be the cleanest place in your house, it deserves the appropriate bath lighting as well.  Perhaps most of us have noticed how uneasy it is for our eyes to have a glaring bath light especially when we just got up from bed at nighttime.  Our retinas adjust, but not instantly, to the amount of light in the surroundings and coming in from a dimmed bedroom to a suddenly bright bathroom isn’t really pleasant.  On the other hand, having decorative bath lighting fixtures also add up to your mood, as well as contending with functionality.

Manufacturers like Broan, Lutron, Nutone, Seagull lighting, Halo, Progress lighting, RAB, Lightlolier, and Kichler offer a wide variety of bath lighting that conforms to the style of your bathroom and your budget.  Mirror lights can be attached to add a decorative effect.  Also in the line of bath lighting are globe lights, recessed lights, and strip lights.  Dimmers can likewise be added to create versatility.

Light for Art’s Sake – art lighting

Thursday 25 September 2008 @ 9:33 am

You have a work of art but how do you keep its colors alive?  Light greatly affects any work of art. In fact, light is such an important component that influenced the impressionists like Rembrandt.  Choosing the appropriate art lighting is as hard as creating art itself.  In museums, there’s a big issue as to what type of light should be used to enhance or maintain the original magnificence of paintings.  Also, art lighting is critical in illuminating art pieces because any angles can make all the difference.

So what exactly is art lighting?

Many believe that natural light (sunlight) is the best type of light to use on art pieces.  This actually is an incorrect notion.  Aside from the fact the natural light is very hard to manage, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are very destructive rays from the sun.  It can fade over time works on paper like pastels, photographs, prints and watercolors.  It could also fade a textile’s color in just a few months.  You wouldn’t want to do that on a masterpiece, would you?

Accent Lighting

Wednesday 7 February 2007 @ 9:50 pm

Lighting can be categorized into ambient or general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is generally used to illuminate a particular area. Task lighting is used to provide illumination to working areas or spaces like for cooking, reading, or doing your favorite hobby. Then we have accent lighting, which caters to the decorative aspect of the lighting plan. Accent lighting highlights specific areas or objects in a room worthy of accentuating.

Accent lighting allows one to highlight an artwork, a plant, a statue, a uniquely textured wall, or anything one wants to emphasize in a room. One should picture in his mind the final effect desired, and work on this by choosing the appropriate brightness level, color of the light, angle of beam, location of source, and the light fixture it comes with.

Different techniques in accent lighting can be applied.

Moonlighting
This requires placing the lights on a high level usually done with recessed lighting in the ceiling. Soft incandescent reflector bulbs are made use of - shining light over plants, which create beautiful patterns on the floor.
