Board and Batten Siding Basics

Friday 15 August 2008 @ 10:04 am

Board and batten siding is one of the most basic ways of siding. This is also called board-and-batt, and is employed by nailing the cedar boards vertically on a wall and covering the spaces in between boards with strips of wood called battens. It is also sometimes called as barn-siding because many North American barns are made with board and batten siding.

Boards that are 6-inch wide should be fixed on the horizontal blocking lines with one nail on its center. The battens are then placed covering the spaces and overlapping on two boards, and will be fastened with one nail on its center as well. Take note though that these battens will not be nailed to the boards, but on the horizontal supports, passing thru the spaces between boards. If you are using an 8-inch wide board, use 2 nails spaced at 3 inches apart.

Barn Siding Reference

Thursday 22 March 2007 @ 8:14 pm

If you want to do a barn siding project, you want to have it done just enough so that it will serve its purpose, and not spend a good deal of money. Below are some guidelines that you can refer to for your barn siding concerns.

Preparation for Barn Siding
The backing for your barn siding should be dark in color, as opposed to using the lighter ones. A dark backing will not show through the holes and gaps in barn siding. Also, for properly securing the barn siding, use a 5/8-inch thick plywood covering the 2 x 4s or 2 x 6s supports.

You may have to prepare tools for the job as saws, fasteners, nail guns, and the like. Have all the necessary tools, accessories and materials prepared. In this way, when you start working, you are able to proceed smoothly.

Aluminum Siding

Tuesday 20 February 2007 @ 9:32 pm

When you hear the term “aluminum siding”, what idea comes first to your mind? Something passé, classical or modern? Whatever it may be, aluminum has never gone out of popularity since the late 1950s. Yes, although many have considered it as an old fashioned alternative, aluminum siding is still used by a number of households anywhere in America and the world these days.

The aluminum siding is deemed by experts as a great option to vinyl. Just like vinyl, it is easy to install and maintain, plus the fact that aluminum is durable enough to withstand from any wear and tear of extreme pressures. It is even resistant to fire and does not pose any health risks, unlike asbestos.

However, aluminum siding has the tendency to fade and dent. Once these imperfections came out, it would be too tough for you to repair the ruined parts especially if it is already completely installed. With that, aluminum needs proper care and maintenance, although not that big.
