A Introduction to the Basics of Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the ancient Eastern art of placement for the purpose of encouraging balance and harmony. The art involves arranging color, elements, numbers and directions in the way that will optimize the flow of positive energy and block the flow of negative energy that affect every part of your life. It takes decades of intense study to master Feng Shui and avoid accidentally causing disastrous outcomes to relationships, business, health and creativity. If you’re silly enough to believe that you can understand the basics of Feng Shui in just a few minutes, well, I’m game to do what I can to help. Here goes.

Feng Shui for Beginners

Feng Shui is more than a decorating style. Its purpose is to assist you in attaining your life’s goals by steering energy into the parts of your life where it’s needed through the use of cures. Before you can place cures, you must decide what part of your life needs help. There are nine life areas. If you place cures in all nine, you will create chaos. The first basic of Feng Shui is to analyze your life and decide what one or two areas will receive the cures. Life areas are health, wealth, family, fame, children/creativity, knowledge, mentors, personal relationships, and career. Remember that an improvement in one of these areas will bring improvements in many if not all of the others.

Once the life area is selected, set goals. So far, this sounds like many other life improvement programs, but remember that the basics of Feng Shui are very basic indeed. We are dealing with elemental energies here so bear with me. Find your goals and write them down as if they are already accomplished – in the present tense. “I wear a size six.” “I have the corner office and a big raise.”

Now, close your eyes and concentrate on how it feels to have that goal accomplished. Do you feel the increased respect? How does that confidence feel? Most of all, how does your life look? If the house of the successful you is less cluttered, toss out the clutter. If the healthier you has no cookies in the cupboard, get rid of the cookies. You’re well on the way to learning the basics of Feng Shui.

Feng Shui Cures

Now it’s time to place the cures. Here the basics of Feng Shui become a little more complicated, involving elements, numbers, colors, taste and so on. Let’s say you want to increase your wealth. The cure involves the colors purple, green and red, the element wood, the number “8”, the rectangular shape, and sour taste. The cures are bamboos, upward growing plants, rectangular objects and aquariums which should be placed either in the southeast or in the left side of the back of the house. Once the cures are in place, note changes in all nine life areas, keep track of progress and make more changes as necessary.

There is much more to the art of Feng Shui, of course. Aromatherapy, crystals, fountains and wind chimes are only the start of the next steps. But now you have the basics of Feng Shui– at least in the area of cures. There are many sources of more information out there to help your good fortune.
