Every little girl has dreamed of having her own four-poster bed just like a princess. Now you’re all grown up and can afford an antique bed. Antique beds are beautifully crafted pieces of art that go beyond just a piece of furniture and they are the perfect touch to a home filled with classic furniture or a fun contrast to a room with sleek modern lines. Unfortunately they don’t often come with mattresses and generally the quality of an “antique” mattress leaves something to be desired.
Size Matters
The advantage of living in modern times is that technology has advanced and bedding is no exception. There are all kinds of different mattresses available to consumers, however when it comes to antique beds, it maybe harder to find an antique bed mattress. The main problem that comes with finding an antique bed mattress is the issue of size.
For example, French antique beds are smaller than most modern beds. A bed that looks twin sized will usually be smaller than the average twin sized bed and antique beds from France larger than 140cm in width are rare. You can also have the opposite problem whereas antique beds can also be very much larger than modern beds such as the luxurious four post enormous beds in period movies, for example.
Recreating the Old or Keeping Up with the New?
Now that you have your antique bed, what should your antique bed mattress look like? There are two ways to go about this. The first, and the easier option, is to simply buy a modern mattress that fits your bed. This way you get the benefits of modern bedding like spinal support, hypoallergenic mattresses, and your antique bed mattress custom made to fit the size of your bed frame. You can also have a mattress made with a combination of solid horse hair, cotton, and lambswool to recreate the authenticity of an antique bed mattress.
Other features like button tufts, rolled edges and brass vents can also be added if you’re going “all out” for an authentic antique bed mattress. While button tufts and rolled edges are merely a decorative touch with only aesthetic value, brass vents improve air circulation of your antique bed mattress.
The Cost of Living in the Past
At the end of the day the choice is really up to you. Whether you decide to opt for a traditional mattress or update the look a little bit with a modern mattress. Choosing an antique bed mattress that is consistent with the look is, of course, the more costly option. You may not want to spend any more money after purchasing your antique bed.
