The Bissell Vacuum Cleaner: Past And Present

Everyone wants to be able to say that they have a tried and true way of doing things. Everyone wants stability in their life, and the world of cleaning can often be a stressful realm to enter. However, by using a Bissell vacuum cleaner, one is not only using a brand that is tried and true, one is also cleaning with ease.

The Birth Of The Bissell Vacuum Cleaner

The Bissell vacuum cleaner was born in the late 1800s, and it was born in a surprisingly ordinary way. It all began when Melville Bissell and his wife Anna owned a crockery shop in Michigan. Anna, trying to clean the shop after a long day of work, often became annoyed with the small particles of sawdust that stuck to the floor and were difficult to remove.

Anna finally became so distraught over her cleaning dilemma that she decided to discuss the problem with Melville. As a solution, Melville who was a good mechanical designer, invented a carpet sweeper that he hoped would help his wife.

Melville’s carpet sweeper, the earliest Bissell vacuum cleaner, not only helped his wife, but went on to help many people with their cleaning tasks. Word spread quickly about this early form of the Bissell vacuum cleaner and, as a result, the Bissell Carpet Sweeper got a patent in 1876 and the first Bissell manufacturing plant was opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1883.

Becoming An Established Name

Melville Bissell died suddenly in 1889, but his death certainly did not signify any sort of an end to the Bissell brand. Anna, ever the businesswoman, took over her husband’s company and became the first female CEO in American history. Under her guidance, the Bissell brand continued to gain quite a favorable reputation.

As time went on, the Bissell Carpet Sweeper became the Bissell vacuum cleaner, since cleaning now required more advanced products. The 1950s saw the Bissell name go beyond just vacuum cleaners, with carpet cleaning solutions added to make cleaning even easier than before.

Today Bissell vacuum cleaners remain quite popular, especially among those who grew up with them, generation after generation. Bissell vacuum cleaners can most likely be found in local department stores, and if not there then the internet in the nest best place to look. For a vacuum that is tried and true, affordable, and an important part of American cultural history, choose as Bissell.
